Location:
Grasslands are located all around the world, including North & South America, Africa and Eurasia.
Climate:
Depending on the location, some grasslands are tropical and some are dry. The Grassland in the US is usually warm in the summertime (around 70 degrees F) and cold in the winter (around 20 degrees F). It gets less rainfall than the tropical Grassland, about 10-30 inches. The Grassland in Africa is usually warmer and more humid, getting around 25-60 inches of rainfall a year.
If you are visiting a dry grassland during the summer, bring summertime clothes and sunscreen. There is not much protection from the sun, because there are not many trees. If you are visiting the dry grassland during the wintertime, you’ll need a warm coat and clothes.
The tropical climate is more forgiving. Pack light clothes, sunscreen (all year round) and don’t forget the bug repellent!
No matter what time of year, don't forget your camera to capture all the incredible sights the grasslands have to offer!
Wildlife:
Rolling hills of spectacular grasses and flowers is what you will find while visiting the grasslands. Here you will be surrounded by 80 different kinds of animals and hundreds of species of birds. Small animals stay alive by hiding in the grasses. Other animals use their speed to outrun predators.
Because the rain is seasonal, there are not very many trees here. The grassland is a large open space where you can see for miles. Mgbnet.com calls it, “an endless ocean of grass.” In the dry grassland, the grass is short, while the tropical grassland is home to taller grass.
Critical issues:
One of the major issues on the grasslands is the depletion of the ozone layer. Researchers have proven that it has affected plant diversity in the grasslands.
Some other issues include urban development. Many grasslands have been developed into cities and towns. Another issue is the fact that livestock grazing has been occurring on the grasslands for over 150 years. Human beings have brought livestock to this area which has disturbed many of the species.
Interesting Facts:
*Grasslands are usually found between the desert & the forest.
*If it received slightly less rain then the biome would be considered the desert. If it rained slightly more, then it would be considered a forest.
